About

My user name shostagirl is named after the character Shasta in The Horse and His Boy by C. S. Lewis and partly after Dmitri Shostakovich, the Russian composer.  I am a music lover who plays the violin.  While I love much of classical music, Russian music and particularly Shostakovich’s work holds a special place in my heart.  I love the justice of the pain of a silenced people expressed through music beautifully.  (If you are interested in learning more about what I mean, message me.  I wrote my senior project in college on this).

Shasta from The Horse and His Boy is one of my favorite literary characters.  He is living a rather dull life adopted by a fisherman when one day events conspire and his life changes.  In the midst of this he discovers an entirely new identity, a new truth about himself.  Guided by a talking horse he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.

After a season of unemployment I am now an assistant preschool teacher.  When I am not teaching I am giving violin lessons, working in my garden, making jewelry for my cousin and I’s new business venture Coral & Rose or reading a book.  I enjoy the process of having my attention captured by great music or a well told story but my artistic expression is focused more in teaching children how to use a violin and a bow to make music or using pliers and wire and any medium I can get my hands on to make jewelry.

My blog (whose name I am not happy with) is here so I can pass along book suggestions and whatever else I have running through my mind demanding to be expressed.
